Do you ever feel like your memory is slipping away? It's more common than you might think. Our memory can start to decline as early as our 30s, but the good news is that there are simple steps you can take to strengthen it.
I have five strategies you can use to sharpen your memory and keep your brain performing at its best.

1. Prioritize Sleep, Exercise, and Stress Management
Sleeping 7-8 hours each night, exercising 2-3 times per week, and managing stress are essential to maintaining a healthy memory. Creating boundaries to reduce stress and making nutritious food choices are simple yet effective ways to protect your brain.
These habits benefit your body and give your brain the support it needs to stay sharp. When your body and mind are well-rested and nourished, memory function improves naturally.
2. Stay Present and Focused
One of the simplest ways to improve your memory is to pay attention to the present moment. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get distracted, but if you force your mind to focus on the moment, you'll retain more information.
Try this tip: When you're introduced to someone new, take a second to focus on their name and face. Say their name out loud while you're looking at them. The effort you put into paying attention will pay off in memory retention.

3. Exercise Your Brain Daily
Remember to exercise your brain just like you do your body. In my personal training sessions, I offer exercises that simultaneously challenge the mind and body. You can set personal challenges to help remember everyday tasks, such as your grocery list, without writing anything down. You can also try puzzles and word games or test yourself by recalling the route to a place you've only traveled to once or twice without using navigation. Think of it like building a muscle. The more you use your memory, the stronger it gets.
4. Create Associations
Memory thrives on connections. When meeting new people, create an association between their name and something memorable—maybe their job or a song that rhymes with their name. (Like Shelly Belly - go ahead, giggle a bit!)
These mental links will help you recall information more easily. It's a powerful tool that makes remembering fun and efficient.
5. Rehearse and Repeat to Strengthen Your Memory
Repetition is key when it comes to recalling important information. When you hear something you want to remember, rehearse it in your mind or repeat it out loud a few times. This practice reinforces your memory, helping it stick. You can even utilize brain-dumping techniques to help you remember new or important things.

Why Building Memory Is Essential for Overall Wellness
Your memory is more than just a tool for remembering facts—it's an integral part of your mental wellness. Keeping your brain active through memory exercises can also support emotional well-being, reduce stress, and improve your overall quality of life. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that cognitive training and memory exercises can positively impact mental health and reduce stress.
